Warren Stone, the New General Manager of
Orient Express, Botswana

Warren Stone is not your ordinary luxury Bush Lodge Manager, no. Although he is still in his 30’s, he has already had a wonderfully exciting life, which has helped contribute to a wisdom and understanding that far surpasses his age.

Warren started his working life managing pubs, being a sommelier in upmarket restaurants and cheffing in top kitchens in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

This was followed by travels for a year through Africa with his wife in an 11 ton Scania truck, which brought him to Accra, Ghana. Here he found himself managing resort hotels in this fascinating West African city, hosting the likes of Kofi Anan, Jerry Rawlings and Isaac Hayes.

Conservation has always been very close to Warren’s heart, and in Ghana he became involved in conserving the area’s wetlands, birding sites and turtle beaches. This he did by educating the local people about the value of the endangered indigenous turtles and helped them understand why they should not eat the turtle’s eggs. He hired guides to patrol the beaches and he held beach-cleaning competitions; he taught people not to throw plastic bags into the sea – the reason for this is that turtles thought they were jellyfish and would eat them and choke.

This was followed by a stint in the Serengeti in Tanzania, training the local managers at Migration Camp. At the same time Warren completed a comprehensive guiding course.

Then he went to Abercrombie & Kent’s Sanctuary Lodges in Northern Botswana - Chobe Chilwero, Chiefs and Stanley’s. Here he was responsible for all the staff training as well as the uplifting of the quality of all three camps. He worked as concession manager at NG32 Concession (Stanley's and Baines Camp) where part of the concession profits went to the local community. Warren also helped build Baines camp with Graham Labe. “What is interesting about this camp,” he says, “is that all the people who were involved in building the camp are from the local community and they are also the same staff, once the camp was completed, who have been employed to run and manage the camp. “

Next stop was as Lodge Manager at Singita Lebombo, in the Kruger Park. This was a fascinating contrast for Warren, working in a very modern and state-of-the-art camp, rubbing shoulders with Annie Lennox and Donna Karan.

Warren’s most recent position before joining Orient-Express was as Operations Manager for All Terrain Services in Ghana – a company that literally set up and ran the residence town sites in the middle of nowhere for the country’s mining and manufacturing industry. Apart from designing the layout of the town sites, he was also responsible for all the hospitality, catering, housekeeping and entertainment needs of the inhabitants.

Warren is very happy to settle down for a while in Maun, Botswana, with his wife and two young children. As General Manager of Orient-Express Botswana, he is looking forward to doing the work he is passionate about – training local staff into management positions, conservation, investing more into community projects, strengthening the guest experience and creating a unique encounter and flair at each of Orient-Express’s three camps in Botswana – Eagle Island Camp, Khwai River Lodge and Savute Elephant Camp.
